Course Description:

This course will cover Domains and Competencies for the Principal TExES (68) Examination and an introduction to research skills.   Degree plans will be developed and mentors will be selected.  This course will also provide students with the opportunity to develop a personal philosophy of leadership (i.e., Leadership Framework), to develop a literature review, and to become acquainted with organizational and administrative theory related to systems, structure, learning, and individuals in schools. Topics such as leadership, ethics, and change will also be included.  Field work will also be a component in this course.

 Intended Learning Outcomes/Goals/Objectives:

Educational leaders must have a basic understanding of organization and administrative theory.  They must be able to synthesize this knowledge within the context of leadership, ethics, and change.  This framework of theoretical knowledge when integrated with real world experiences and practices will inform their actions in a positive manner.

Course goals are drawn from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Curriculum Guide for School Administrators and the Interstate School Leader Licensure Consortium (ISLLC).

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Course Prerequisites
You must be admitted to the prinicpal preparation program and permitted to take this course.

Course Format and Participation Requirements
The format for this course includes scheduled assignments and deadlines, offline reading assignments and projects, online readings and participation using web pages, email, discussion boards, and chat. The course includes scheduled online quizzes and exams. The course also requires some scheduled face-to-face meetings as indicated below. To be successful in this course, the typical student should plan to spend at least 12-15 hours per week working on this course.

On-campus or Face-to-Face Meeting Requirements
You will be required to attend a face-to-face meeting three times during the semester. These will be outlined in the course.

Course Assessment
Coursework will be graded on a point system. This will be discussed in more detail in the course.

Effort Expected
This is a 3 credit-hour course. You should expect to work 1 to 2 hours per week for each credit hour.  To be successful in this course you should expect to spend about 8 hours a week on readings, assignments, discussions, and other activities. This estimate is for the fall and spring semesters; if the course is offered during the summer course, more time per week may be necessary.

Technical Requirements for the Course
Other than the
minimum technical requirements for any course, students will need to have knowledge of using attachments, sending and receiving emails, designing PowerPoint presentations, and doing research online.
