Course Description
The course focuses on curriculum standards and curriculum alignment. The course examines how to improve curriculum by teaching for understanding emphasizing the Texas curriculum Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Assessment of curriculum using the backwards design model and TEKS and TAKS is stressed.Successful school administrators must be able to oversee the design of curriculum and the development of a strategic plan that enhances teaching and learning in multiple contexts. Deciding what to teach, aligning what is taught and testing what is taught are all components of curriculum, which becomes the responsibility of instructional leaders. To be instructional leaders, administrators must understand issues in curriculum and the factors that impact the decisions concerning curriculum.
Course Goals
- Examine curriculum design and delivery systems for diverse school communities. Include the study of the current Texas mandated model Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
- Examine what developmentally appropriate curriculum and instructional practices mean.
- Demonstrate an understanding of curricular alignment to ensure improved student performance and higher-order thinking. Include the alignment of TEKS and TAKS.
- Understand the need to create curricula based on research, applied theory, informed practice, recommendations of learned societies, and state and federal policies and mandates.
- Examine reading instruction in Texas schools.
- Examine the use of technology to enrich curriculum development and delivery.

You must be admitted to the prinicpal preparation program and permitted to take this course.Course Format and Participation Requirements
The format for this course includes scheduled assignments and deadlines, offline reading assignments and projects, online readings and participation using web pages, email, discussion boards, and chat. The course includes scheduled online quizzes and exams. The course also requires some scheduled face-to-face meetings as indicated below. To be successful in this course, the typical student should plan to spend at least 12-15 hours per week working on this course.On-campus or Face-to-Face Meeting Requirements
You will be required to attend a face-to-face meeting three times during the semester. These will be outlined in the course.Course Assessment
Coursework will be graded on a point system. This will be discussed in more detail in the course.Effort Expected
This is a 3 credit-hour course. You should expect to work 1 to 2 hours per week for each credit hour. To be successful in this course you should expect to spend about 8 hours a week on readings, assignments, discussions, and other activities. This estimate is for the fall and spring semesters; if the course is offered during the summer course, more time per week may be necessary.Technical Requirements for the Course
Other than the minimum technical requirements for any course, students will need to have knowledge of using attachments, sending and receiving emails, designing PowerPoint presentations, and doing research online.Before the Course Begins
