Course Description
The purpose of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the visual arts. The course will deal with the nature of art questioning the definition of art, examining the reasons why artists and cultures create art, and studying various critical theories related to the criticism of art. Students will study the formal components of art by examining the art elements and design principles of two and three dimensional art works. Students will also learn about the processes and tools used in various art disciplines. The second half of the semester will chronologically explore the various schools of art and cultures in Western and Non-Western art history.

Course Format and Participation Requirements
The format for this course includes scheduled assignments and deadlines, offline reading assignments and projects, online readings and participation using web pages, email, and discussion boards. The course includes scheduled online quizzes and exams. To be successful in this course, the typical student should plan to spend at least 12-15 hours per week working on this course.

Course Assessment
All assignments including quizzes, exams and other forms of assessment should be completed by the due date listed in the course timeline and calendar. Students are also expected to complete written assignments using correct grammar and spelling at a college level.

Effort Expected
This is a 3 credit-hour course. You should expect to work 4 to 5 hours per week for each credit hour.  To be successful in this course you should expect to spend about 12-15 hours a week on readings, assignments, discussions, and other activities. This estimate is for the fall and spring semesters; if the course is offered during the summer course, more time per week may be necessary.

Technical Requirements for the Course
Other than the minimum technical requirements for any course, students will need access to a CD-ROM drive and Real Player software.
