Course Description
An interdisciplinary approach to communication as related to business organizations. Readings and case studies in areas of intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, organizational, and mediated communication as well as culture, persuasion, diversity, and leadership.

Course Prerequisites
Graduate standing .

Course Format and Participation Requirements
The format for this course includes scheduled assignments and deadlines, offline reading assignments and online presentations, journals, and discussions. Group projects will require participation using web pages, email, and discussion boards. In addition, students will write two individual papers applying the communication theories studied to a specific organization. These papers will be considered the mid-term and final exams. To be successful in this course, the typical student should plan to spend at least 10-12 hours per week working on this course.

Course Assessment
Student grades will be determined on the basis of successful completion of the following activities:

Discussion assignments: Each module has a discussion topic. Students will be responsible for posting a message AND for responding to messages posted by others.

Online journal: For each module, students will submit an entry in the online journal. Each entry should contain discussion/analysis of one concept from the module, an application of that concept to real experience, and a reflection of the use of that concept in the future.

Case analysis: Students will be responsible for individual reflection assignments for each case. Additionally, each student will participate as a team member in developing a web-based presentation for at least one (possibly two) cases. Specific details will be provided for each assignment.

Reflection papers: Students will write two individual papers applying the communication theories studied to a specific organization. These papers will be considered the mid-term and final exams.

Effort Expected
This is a three-credit-hour course. You should expect to work three to four hours per week for each credit hour.  To be successful in this course you should expect to spend about 10-12 hours a week on readings, assignments, discussions, and other activities. This estimate is for the fall and spring semesters; if the course is offered during the summer course, more time per week may be necessary.

Technical Requirements for the Course
Other than the minimum technical requirements for any course, students will need Microsoft Word and PowerPoint software.

Before the Course Begins
