Course Description

A study of development and enhancement of cognitive abilities and oral language with an emphasis in the development of thinking for early childhood in the areas of  beginning literacy and math for children. Must be taken concurrently with  RDG 415, ELE 351, and ELE 352.

Course Prerequisites
 Completion of HMS 241, HMS 241L, HMS 242, ECH 328, ECH 328L, ECH 331 and ECH 331L, maintain a 2.5 or better GPA, and  be admitted into Teacher Education.

Course Format and Participation Requirements
The format for this course includes scheduled assignments and deadlines, offline reading assignments and projects, online readings and participation using web pages, email, and discussion boards. The course includes scheduled online quizzes and exams. The course also requires some scheduled face-to-face meetings as indicated below.  The final exam is an academic paper submitted during the week of finals.  To be successful in this course, the typical student should plan to spend at least 12 hours per week working on this course.

On-campus or Face-to-Face Meeting Requirements
ECH 332 requires learners to come to the SFA campus once during the semester for a 3-4 hour meeting. This campus visit is scheduled at the same time as the visit for ELE 351, ELE 352, RDG 415 and the respective labs.

Course Assessment
Grades will be calculated according to the percentage of total points a teacher candidate earns. Students will not receive a final course grade until all assignments have been completed.  Grades may be determined by dividing the total points earned by the total number of possible points.  NO LATE WORK will receive full credit. 

Effort Expected
This is a 3-credit-hour course. You should expect to work 3 to 4 hours per week for each credit hour.  To be successful in this course you should expect to spend about 12 hours a week on readings, assignments, discussions, and other activities. This estimate is for the fall and spring semesters; if the course is offered during the summer course, more time per week may be necessary.

Technical Requirements for the Course
Other than the minimum technical requirements for any course, students will need , Real Player software,  and a digital video camera.

Before the Course Begins
