ELE 539 Culturally Responsive Teaching

Course Description
1 hour credit. A capstone seminar for Post Baccalaureate initial certification (PBIC) students seeking initial EC-4 or 4-8 certification with a focus on the TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities competencies.

Course Prerequisites
Graduate status and permission of PBIC advisor.

Course Format and Participation Requirements
The course includes online discussions of the PPR competencies and Web-based reading assignments. This course includes one scheduled on-campus capstone exam. To be successful in this course, the typical student should plan to spend at least 3 hours per week working on this course.

On-campus or Face-to-Face Meeting Requirements
Students residing within 250 miles of SFA are required to take the ELE 539 capstone exam on this campus with time and location to be arranged with the instructor. Those residing at a distance greater than 250 miles may request a proctored final at a reasonable site in your own locale. You will have to make these arrangements subject to the instructor's approval.

Course Assessment

You must pass the Capstone exam with a grade of at least 75% or you will receive a grade of WH in ELE 539 until you achieve that level of mastery.

Effort Expected
This is a 1-credit-hour course. You should expect to work at least 3 hours per week for each credit hour.  To be successful in this course you should expect to spend about 3 hours a week on readings, assignments, discussions, and other activities. This estimate is for the fall and spring semesters; if the course is offered during the summer course, more time per week may be necessary.

POLICY ON WH GRADES

The university policy concerning WH grades states, "Students are responsible for providing documentation satisfactory to the instructor for each class missed. Students with acceptable excuses will be permitted to make up work for absences to a maximum of three weeks of a semester or one week of a six-week summer term when the nature of the work missed permits." It also states that: "Students may not attend sections of a course in future semesters to 'complete' a WH grade. Limited course visitation may be arranged with the permission of the instructor. When students register for the same course in future terms the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point average."

 

ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION

Admission to Teacher Education requires 2.5 GPA. Students must maintain the 2.5 GPA during the remainder of the course work. If the GPA falls below 2.5 during the intern courses or student teaching, students will be dropped from professional education courses.
