MTH 220 – Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Course Description
Probability, random variables, mean and variance, binomial distribution, normal distribution, statistical inference, and linear regression. 

Required Textbook
The required textbook is Discovering Statistics textbook with Hawkes Learning Systems software CD by Hawkes and Marsh. Having the Hawkes Learning Systems (HLS) software CD is mandatory in order to take this course AND you should have it and be able to log into HLS no later than the FIRST DAY of class.

Course Prerequisites
Two years of high school algebra and one year of high school geometry. In addition, a minimum math score of 250 on THEA or 21 on ACT or 500 on SAT or a C or better in MTH 099 is required. 

Course Format and Participation Requirements
The course includes scheduled online homework assignments and exams. All exams will be taken online except the final, for which students will be required to come to campus. The course and the current syllabus will be available on the first official day of classes for the university. On-campus or Face-to-Face Meeting Requirements
The comprehensive final exam will be given in a required on-campus meeting with the exact date, time, and location to be announced in the syllabus. 

Course Assessment
Your grade will be based on a weighted average of two online tests and the on-campus final exam.   

Effort Expected
This is a 3-credit-hour course. You should expect to work 3 to 4 hours per week for each credit hour. To be successful in this course, the typical student should plan to spend 9-12 hours per week working on this course.

Technical Requirements for the Course
Other than the minimum technical requirements for any course, students will need access to a CD-ROM for the lessons and homework, a computer with a CD-ROM and an internet connection for the two online exams.  Note: the required software for this course is currently not compatible with a Macintosh operating system.
