Course Description
A seminar in literacy instruction for the upper elementary/middle school level..

Textbook Requirements
    Allen,J. (2000).  Yellow brick roads:  Shared and guided paths to independent reading 4-12.  York, ME: Stenhouse.
    Wood, K.D.& Dickinson, T.S., (Eds.) (2000).  Promoting literacy in grades 4-9:  A handbook for teachers and administrators.  Neeedham Heights, MA:  Allyn & Bacon.
    Children's Novels:
            The Giver by Lois Lowry
            The Van Gogh Cafe by Cynthia Rylant
            One additional children's book of your choice (appropriate for 4-8 grades)

Course Format and Participation Requirements
The format for this course includes scheduled assignments and deadlines, offline reading assignments and projects, online readings and participation using web pages, email, and discussion boards. The course may include scheduled online quizzes and exams. The course also requires no scheduled face-to-face meetings. To be successful in this course, the typical student should plan to spend at least 12-15 hours per week working on this course.

Effort Expected
This is a 3-credit-hour course. You should expect to work 3 to 4 hours per week for each credit hour.  To be successful in this course you should expect to spend about 15 hours a week on readings, assignments, discussions, and other activities. This estimate is for the fall and spring semesters; if the course is offered during the summer course, more time per week may be necessary.
