Computer System Requirements

You must have access to hardware and software in order to be successful in your online course. The following lists the minimum hardware and software required for an online course. Please check the course Information page for any additional course-specific requirements.

 
Hardware Requirements
Review the following list of minimum hardware requirements to take an online course:
Operating System Windows 2000/XP or a Macintosh with System 9.2 or higher
Processor 600 MHz or higher (1.0 GHz or greater recommended)
Memory 64 MB of RAM (256 MB recommended)
Hard Drive Space 100 MB free disk space (1.0 GB recommended)
Modem 56 kbps or higher speed (broadband/high-speed recommended)
Printer optional (check with your instructor)
CD-ROM optional - some courses use textbooks with CD-ROMs
Sound Card optional (check with your instructor)
Monitor 15" monitor (800 x 600 resolution - 1024 x 768 resolution recommeded)

 
 

Software Requirements
Review the following list of software requirements to take an online course (please check course pages for software required for each online course):

Internet Access Any Internet Service Provider (ISP)*

Browser

WebCT 4.1 & 6.0 supports the following browsers:

  • Microsoft IE versions 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0.
  • Netscape versions 6.2.x, 7.0 and 7.1.
  • AOL versions 7.0 and 8.0.

Determining your Browser Version

To determine browser version click "Check Browser" in the WebCT menu bar or follow the steps below:

  • Open your browser
  • From the browser menu bar, select Help
  • Select About. If there are several, choose the one about your browser
  • A screen will appear that shows your browser name and version.

OIT recommends that AOL users should use either Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers after gaining access through AOL.

E-Mail Client SFA Titan account (mySFA), Hotmail, Yahoo, or any other e-mail service (a web-based e-mail service recommended but not required).

For the latest version of Apple Quick Time

PDF Reader

Free Adobe Reader on adobe.com.

PowerPoint Viewer For a free PowerPoint viewer, click here.
Pop-Up Blocker Please be aware that if you have an ad or pop-up blocker (Pop-Up Stopper, Pop-Up Defender, Pop-Up Zapper, etc.) activated, it will hinder the use of the quiz/survey and chat tool. You must disable it during the time you are working in WebCT. Please note that each time you boot your computer you will have to disable the blocker program before working in WebCT with the tools mentioned above.
